One is, can I use it for video capture? It has a VGA input (looks similar almost to an Svideo). I was thinking that I might be able to use it in a media center PC, by hooking it through a VCR. But I would obviously need some kind of adapter for that to work. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Sounds like that's a Creative Dxr3 MPEG2 decoder card. Back in olden times (Pentium-1 days), when PC DVD drives were first coming onto the market, most CPUs didn't have the power to decode the MPEG-2 stream fast enough for you to watch a movie. The solution was to install this PCI card with a dedicated MPEG-2 decoder chip. You hooked up your video card output to the passthrough port on this card, and then hooked your monitor to the decoder card. Normally it passed just the signal through (often with some signal degradation), but when you used the bundled DVD player app the card would insert the MPEG-2 frames into the screen image. There's no need for it these days, and really nothing to be gained by installing it.

SPDIF OUT- I know this one- it means I can use an RCA cable right? TV Out- it's an Svideo connector VGA out- obvious VGA in- looks like an Svideo at a glance, but pins are configured differently was this where you plug in the thing that goes between the video card and decoder card? And if yes, then you had to have a little wire dangling out the back that connected between your video card and the decoder? Do you think this can be adapted to capture video from say. A satellite box or VCR? Do you know the official name of this connector style (VGA input) so I can look for an adapter?
Well, I was thinking about this- what I would have to do is sort of wierd, but it MIGHT be able to work. I would to run a cable from the satelite box to a 2 position switch. Then I would run from the VGA output on my VIA board the switch. Then I would connect the switch to the VGA in.
That way, when I booted the system, I would be able to see the OS an all that is going on. Then I would throw the switch, and allow the signal from the satellite/VCR to pass through the decoder card. ^^Obviously if this would work at all, it would require a good deal of different adapters, and probably not really worthwhile. But it's a fun thought anyway. I think I'm going to put this card in a dually PII rig I'm getting, and connect it through a cheapo GFX card, so I can have a high-quality video output. Then I'll get a seperate capture card (which are available for cheap/nothing on Agora).
I'll make that my media center, and the VIA C3 my server. I had one of these cards that came with an old Creative DVD drive. No, you will not be able to use it to capture anything. The sound from anything decoded from this card is output through its Line-Out (and mixed with its CD-In input so you can use it as a pass-through if your sound card only has one AUX/CD internal connector). The external Line-Out is exactly the same as the internal one, but the external S/PDIF jack only outputs what the card has decoded (no pass-through). The card came with a short (6' or so) cable that connected between your video card and the DXR3 (unimportant trivia: DXR3 stood for Dynamic eXtended Resolution version 3-I also had a DXR2 card at one point). Basically, the software it came with would make your video card display a bright magenta rectangle wherever this card was supposed to overlay its decoded video.
By using the pass-through you enabled the card to overlay this magenta rectangle with the decoded video. The software even had a fine-adjustment function to adjust the signal timing if you got magenta fringes around your decoded video (I could never completely get rid of this-there would almost always be half a pixel or so of bright magenta on one or both sides of the video). The card has no real processing attached to the video input, it just replaces anything magenta with video (I think I tested this once by setting my desktop background color to magenta-instant video desktop!). The S-Video and Composite outputs just output the video full-screen. The card did have some nice resolution scaling and deinterlacing features for the time, but really it was only useful in the era of the 233MHz Pentium II and below. Above that and you could get a decent software DVD player that didn't leave magenta fringes on the sides of your video and didn't cause your VGA output to be blurry at anything higher than about 1024x768.
Hey, Thanks for the links- I noticed that Xine did have support, and GeexBox (nice little media center) supported the DXR3, although not the DXR2. So by 'rendering back to an overlay without using the passthrough', you mean I can have the decoder in PCI slot 1, and the GFX card in PCI slot 2, and the Decoder will function the way it should with the passthrough cable? That would be cool because right now I don't have that passthrough cable, although it is still available from Creative for $7 (more than I paid for the card).
