Now, the developers have switched to a “freemium” model and expect me to pay for access to the same program I purchased not so long ago. This is at very least unethical if not illegal.

It certainly isn’t wise for companies to screw the very people who financially supported them so that they could survive long enough to need a plan that accomodates growth like this. It’s much easier to keep a happy customer (who tells others about their app) than to find new ones. They have lost this customer and many others, I suspect.

Maybe this doesn’t seem to apply to you because you’re getting it “free” - except that nothing is actually free and you’ll have to pay to fully use this app. I will never give another cent to this company and I’ll think twice before supporting others if Apple offers no protection against this bait and switch behavior.
