Share this story. I'm not exactly what you would call a social butterfly (oh really? Is that why you spend your free time writing about iPhones and Newtons and such? I had no idea!) so the appeal of the ancient art of karaoke is mostly lost on me. That doesn't mean it's not an immensely popular way to express your (as in, not 'my') inner Geddy Lee after having a few beers. To help you practice your craft in the privacy of your own house or non-videotaped workplace, Griffin Technology now presents, a surprisingly nifty little bit of kit that lets you build your own karaoke lyric videos. The application—available for Windows as well as OS X—closely resembles iMovie, with a preview window and a timeline track at the bottom.

Once you import a song (most QuickTime formats are supported, but protected AACs from the iTunes Store are not), a built-in search tool lets you look up lyrics online or you can type them in yourself. Click the Sync Lyrics button to begin playback, and as the track progresses, tap the spacebar to sync up the current line. Before you can drunkenly recite the words to 'More Than A Feeling,' you've got yourself a professional-looking karaoke lyric movie suitable for playback on, say, a video iPod.

(Yes, apparently Apple still makes those, despite what you may have thought by reading the Mac press for the last two months.) Griffin's apparent intent is to partner the free software with its iKaraoke microphone, which removes the lyric track from a particular song. If you've ever dreamed of scoring big at your next wedding or business bash, this is definitely the setup for you. Even if you're not a big singalong fan yourself, your kids will probably love the ability to follow along next time you play them a Baby Beatles track. Hopefully Griffin isn't about to be in this market space.

Griffin Technology has released, a tool for creating karaoke videos from your existing music library. The product enhances the full karaoke experience of Griffin's iKaraoke, a $50 iPod attachment. It's a freeware application for Mac and PC that lets iKaraoke users make their own free karaoke videos using any song they own. Griffin says 'The iKaraoke supplies the music, you supply the words and you can enjoy karaoke with any song, anytime and anywhere.
